Transportation arteries around the world are more loaded - and it concerns not only expensive, but also sea routes. The new system of naval radars (development of German scientists) will improve navigational ability of the courts, as well as protect them from pirates.
Piracy foscam - one of the greatest risk factors for international shipping. Pirates attack on container ships and tankers, most of all - off the coast of Somalia and West Africa. In 2012, 174 vessels were taken on board the ship, 28 - kidnapped, 28 - fired. In pirates foscam took hostage 585 sailors. In these waters the pirates act very convenient - on their speedboats they swim up to the massive ships and take them under control. Bulky rotating radar antenna ships can not detect pirated little ships on time.
Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for High Frequency Physics foscam and Radar Technology (Wachtberg, Germany) offer - instead of spinning antennas and high-power signals - the scanning foscam array antennas with improved transmission and signal processing. "Our radar transmits signals that are reflected from the buoys and similar objects. It handles regular foscam waves - that is, the shape and phase of the transmitted pulse signal is essentially identical. Between the signal and its echo there is a certain phase shift, so we can accurately measure elapsed time and to calculate the speed and distance to the object, "- explains Dr. Thomas Bertuh (Thomas foscam Bertuch).
Moreover, a stable foscam phase shift allows you to compare the phase between consecutive foscam pulses, and so suppress interference echoes from the crests of waves, rain and hail. While the conventional power radar transmitter (based on magnetron tube) is more, they are less accurate because of arbitrary shapes and phases of each pulse (so-called non-coherent signal processing.)
Ship radar Fraunhofer foscam Institute boasts a very active phased array and coherent (or pulse-Doppler) signal processing. It is able to detect more objects with greater accuracy. Conventional rotating radar antenna sends a "circular" signals in all directions. A new radar beam can be quickly sent to the desired direction. Its geometry (large number of antenna elements) foscam allows the device to work even in case of failure of the parts. Finally, the phased array radars cheaper to operate (magnetrons foscam wear quickly, and they have to change every year).
However, the high cost of production of phased arrays until recently limited the scope of their use of military courts. Fortunately, recent changes in the shipping law allowed to use a low power radar transmitter. Now, in a new type of radar can use inexpensive materials and technological solutions.
Each receiver-transmitter unit Fraunhofer foscam radar includes an integrated circuit combined (analog-digital) type based on silicon and germanium - the development of the Department of analog integrated circuits Aachen University.
Microchips foscam contain amplifiers, phase regulator and all digital components necessary to control the antenna. Radar is also equipped with a proprietary signaling device for individual antenna elements to the receiver.
